Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Large-Scale Displacement Confirmed

The Philippines was severely impacted by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, resulting in at least two people dead and displaced over a million residents.

Officials reported that the massive storm caused extensive sudden floods, coastal inundation, mudslides, and fierce gale-force winds, prompting the relocation of millions of residents nationwide.

Extensive Destruction and Rescue Efforts

In Pandan, Catanduanes, a severely affected area, emergency crews recorded floodwaters climbing to rooftop levels and residences washed out by the powerful currents.

“Our personnel saved fourteen people who were trapped on the roof surrounded by water in a flood-prone area,” an emergency official stated. “A father frantically contacted us, reporting the roof of his house was at risk of tearing away by the wind. We rescued him along with four family members.”

By Monday, officials announced two fatalities: a drowning victim in Catanduanes and another killed when her house collapsed in eastern Samar.

Storm Intensity and Projected Path

The intense storm weakened to a typhoon on Monday morning as it crossed the main island, home to the national capital.

According to the state weather service, its maximum winds dropped from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, though wind bursts peaked at more than 275 km/h.

The cyclone is expected to lose strength as it moves north toward Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The country’s emergency management agency stated it was still working to evaluate destruction on buildings and roads.

Roughly 6,000 evacuation centres have been opened to temporarily house 92,000 families.

Previous Storms and Climate Impact

Fung-wong struck shortly following Typhoon Kalmaegi, which killed hundreds of lives with another 135 missing prior to advancing to Vietnam, where it killed five.

Search operations for those still missing had to be suspended on Sunday over risks to emergency personnel.

The climate crisis is causing cyclones more intense and frequent. Fung-wong is the 21st typhoon to impact the nation in 2025.

Scientists have found that the rate of super-typhoons hitting the Philippines has increased by more than 100% in the past twenty years.

International estimates suggest that severe weather events cause approximately millions in dollars in damage for the Philippines every year.

The nation’s leader issued a state of emergency on Thursday because of the severe damage from Kalmaegi and the expected damage from Fung-wong.
