Balloons carrying a large quantity of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for hours when multiple of them drifted across the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights disrupting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Regional Consequences
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why smugglers utilize a approach that remains highly susceptible to weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and participants so that these practices become not financially viable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
