Jair Bolsonaro arrested after being declared a escape threat

Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities found he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under house arrest.

The former head of state was sentenced of plotting a government overthrow in last fall and handed more than 27 years in incarceration, but he was staying under home detention pending court reviews.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after "new facts" were revealed.

This involved seeking to disable his ankle monitor and a invitation to a public vigil that could facilitate a chance to flee".

Legal Document Reveals Flight Fears

In a document approving the custody, Justice Moraes said data from the centre monitoring his home detention suggested the one-time head of state's "intention to break the electronic ankle bracelet to guarantee victory in his flight.

This, it said, would be made easier by the chaos caused by the demonstration called by his child.

His child, his son Flávio, who works as a legislator, called for a meeting of his supporters near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday night.

His son wrote on social media on last Friday: Will you battle for your country, or observe everything from your mobile device there on your sofa? I urge you to battle with us."

He said the gathering would be so supporters could seek divine intervention for his well-being and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our country."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of the judge's determination was the potential of his "relocation to embassies near the dwelling, considering that the probes revealed a background of arranging to request asylum through a consular facility", a statement said.

The court filing highlights that the US embassy in the capital, Brasilia, is positioned around 8 miles from his dwelling.

Worldwide Consequences

Bolsonaro's legal woes have generated frustration from fellow right-wing populist United States President Trump, leading him to impose a half-rate duty on Brazilian product imports.

He is being kept in a Federal Police station in Brazil's capital city and will undergo a detention review on Sunday.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on the previous day that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the High Court to allow him to fulfill his full incarceration period under house arrest, with tracking devices.

They also requested that the former president be authorized to exit his dwelling for medical care, saying he required regular treatment for lung conditions and other ailments.

Background on Conviction

He was found guilty of leading a scheme aimed at keeping him in power after he was defeated in the national vote to his ideological adversary, Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he had knowledge of a scheme which encompassed plans to assassinate the current president and his running partner, his vice-presidential candidate, and to detain and kill Justice Moraes - the top judicial official who has been managing his judicial proceedings.

The scheme was prevented because it didn't receive the support of the armed forces officials. The current president was took office without incident on the first day of 2023.

But a following week, on January 8th, many his followers invaded and destroyed official structures in the national capital, the capital city.

The police took action and around fifteen hundred individuals were arrested.

The magistrates found that the protesters had been encouraged by the former president whose scheme, they said, was for the country's army to take action, reestablish control and reinstate his authority.

At the moment, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the decades-long sentence extremely harsh.

He was also prohibited from running for public office until the year 2060 - eight years later after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The one-time head of state called the court case a "witch hunt and said it was designed to prevent him competing in the 2026 national vote.
